THIS IS THE NEWS
Enterprise, security, voice, wireless… whatever’s happened to 3Com?
As one of the main seminal names — in corporate networking, and the firm that brought Ethernet to the mass market, 3Com is well known for its LAN solutions.

But in recent years, this venerable brand has almost completely reinvented itself, to become the new leader in non-proprietary, standards-based networking for the age of secure convergence networking.

Known as a reliable provider of switches and routers for the SMB, 3Com has stunned the industry by becoming the fastest-growing manufacturer of advanced enterprise network solutions, through its subsidiary Huawei-3Com.

Explosive growth in enterprise networking

Formed in 2003 as a joint venture with China’s leading network manufacturer, H3C (as it’s known) is now majority-owned by 3Com — and has over 30% of the huge and rapidly expanding Chinese market.

The fruits of this partnership include a new range of high quality enterprise core and edge switching products and complementary WAN Routers. These feature-rich solutions provide enterprise customers with a choice of vendor for the first time in years.

Leading the new in-line security market

Security is the key to delivering the open-access networks every business now requires — and 3Com is leading the market here, too.

In 2002, 3Com’s TippingPoint division launched the first Intrusion Prevention System (IPS). As the fastest, highest capacity in-line security device, the TippingPoint IPS performs total packet inspection with switch like latency, so can protect even voice traffic from intrusion and attack.

Advanced user and device authentication, Quarantine to isolate suspect devices without interrupting operations, and a Digital Vaccine® service to fend off new threats before they hit, all mean 3Com provides unparalleled network security.

Affordable voice and unified wireless for the SMB

With a standards-based approach and a long history of manufacturing excellence, 3Com is the brand that brings enterprise-level technologies within reach of every organisation, large and small.

Pioneering affordable VoIP in 1998, we now provide packaged solutions based on the standards used by 70% of the world’s service providers. And our new ‘one-box’ unified wireless switch is set to revolutionise SMB networking (see the full story in this newsletter).

Supporting the transformation of education and government

3Com is at the forefront of helping transform government through networks for employees, organisations and citizens. 3Com’s Secure Government Networks are helping leading organisations such as Preston City Council to build flexible communication networks that enable expansion and modernisation of services.

3Com Education Networks provide the multi-level security and safety benefits that schools, colleges and childrens/youth services require. We’ve already delivered an expanded virtual teaching and learning environment to schools such as Caroline Chisholm School in Northampton.

And we’re partnering with key associations such as NAACE to aid their efforts to promote transformation and modernisation within education establishments.

It all points to 3Com being one of the leading suppliers of networking to the public sector.
